NGO Symplefsi organizes, on an annual basis, the crossing of the Aegean Sea during which the team stops on isolated islands. Symplefsi offers donations of supplies and equipment for schools, free diagnostic tests by doctors and nurses of all specialties, infrastructure ( i.e. desalinators, multipurpose courts, playgrounds etc.) as well as other donations related to education, culture, sports and the environment. The ultimate objective of Symplefsis remains, throughout the years, the strengthening and improvement of living conditions for the residents of the remote islands of Greece.
The Neraida Floating Museum funded the 2016 crossing, focusing on schools. In more detail, the grant enabled the purchase of educational and electronic equipment, including projectors, computers, photocopiers and scanners, furniture (bookcases, tables, chairs), as well as consumables and learning toys for the support of teachers. The material donated was selected by the teachers of every school and then it was evaluated and cross-checked with the local authorities and each school’s parents’ and guardians’ association in order to verify the necessity of the requested items for the educational staff.
The 2016 crossing lasted 11 days during which 11 RIBs and one auxiliary boat with the participation of 80 volunteers visited nine isolated islands (Kimolos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Schinousa Levitha, Patmos, Arki, Lipsi and Agathonisi). Alongside with in kind donations (3 multipurpose sports fields, one ambulance in Sikinos, equipment at the Patmios Educational and Cultural Center, one vehicle for garbage collection in Agathonisi etc.), a series of recreational, cultural and informational activities took place such as book presentations for children, interactive educational workshop on human relations, smoking prevention seminars for adolescents, photography exhibitions, shadow theater performances (Karagiozis) etc.
